The Capim Dourado (Syngonanthus nitens) is a grass-like plant that grows in a particular region of the Brazilian Savanna – The Jalapao, in Tocantins State.
Its main characteristic is the bright and golden colour of its flower stems, hence the name Capim Dourado, which literally means “Golden Grass.”
The production of handcrafts made from Capim Dourado dates back from 1930, but was only on the early 2000’s that it got discovered by international fashion industry. Since then, the demand for Capim Dourado jewellery and artefacts grew exponentially.
In 2007, in the attempt to prevent predatory harvesting practices, the Brazilian Government, have created a number of conservation parks and environmental laws which regulates the harvesting, production and the commercialization of the product.
These regulations ensure that Capim Dourado handcrafts are ECO-FRIENDLY, SUSTAINABLE and FAIR TRADE.

The Capim Dourado can only be harvested between 20th of September to the 20th of November each year.
This measure does not only ensures that the colour of the Capim Dourado is at its brightest but also ensure that their seeds are mature and can grow again if spread in the fertile soil of the Jalapao.
In addition, the Brazilian regulations also determine that all seeds must be taken off from the stems and left on the field. This gives the seeds the opportunity to grow into adult plans and continue the reproductive cycle.
So when buying Dourado Jewellery you can rest assured that you are buying SUSTAINABLE product.
The commercialization of Capim Dourado artefacts is the main source of income of many families in the Jalapao region.
In order to aggregate value to the products, only finished pieces can be commercialized outside the Jalapao region. The sale of raw or “in-natura” products is not allowed. All jewellery and accessories are individually handcrafted, creating job opportunities to hundreds of artisans in the area.
In addition, regulations also ensure that the harvesting can only be done by registered artisans, which are living in communities near the harvesting fields.
So, by buying Dourado Jewellery, you know that you are supporting FAIR TRADING practices and helping families in need in the Jalapao region.
